A Companion Educational Series produced by

“Prior to this course I understood a lot of the components of bookmaking but what I learned here was more about the big picture related to your project. How can you make it a reality from beginning to end? The information was so thorough and comprehensive. What I learned in 9 weeks could have taken years to unearth”

“Hearing insights and approaches from so many artists, designers, publishers, printers, librarians, curators and classmates has shifted my perspective and given me permission to play and experiment. I feel I can more fully own my photo book vision.”

Mary Virginia Swanson developed and produced with La Luz Workshops a companion 9-week educational series entitled Publish Your Photography Book featuring over 40 hours of original content, combining deep lectures by Swanson & co-author Darius Himes with presentations and interviews with 25 special guest contributors to the third edition of the book.

The course was conducted on Zoom, with live classes concluding July 1st, 2023.

All class sessions were recorded, and resources and related links compiled for downloadable content for course participants.

Along with the 9-week course, nine photographers on their publishing journeys were interviewed by Himes, sharing their advice for first-time bookmakers, including; Tabitha Soren, Todd Hido, Raymond Meeks, Daniel Milnor, Sonja Thomsen, Awoiska van der Molen, Mona Kuhn, Lisa McCarty, Wendel White. Preview content from the four hours from the “Publishing Stories” series here.

The complete course recordings includes all original course content including Q&A sessions with each guest contributor and 119 pages of downloadable resources and links, compiled by Mary Virginia Swanson, directly related to the content provided in the Core Lectures and Applied Study Seminars. This material reinforces, augments and amplifies the rich material contained in Publish your Photography Book.
